Performance Tuning
Performance tuning is as much an art as it is
a science. Tune one parameter for increased performance and you
may degrade three others in the process. Chackett Consulting has
extensive experience using a very wide variety of tools for managing
and tuning for performance.
Some of the tools we implement include:
- OS tools such as vmstat iostat netstat and
memstat
- The SE Toolkit by Adrian Cockroft and Adrian
Pettit
- Orca (Built on the Orcallator)
- Load tools such as LoadRunner and WinRunner
from Mercury Interactive
A typical performance tuning exercise will investigate
various subsystems:
- The kernel
- The disk subsystem (I/O)
- The memory subsystem (paging and swapping)
- The TCP/IP stack (NIC bottlenecks and stack
queues)
