Performance Tuning

Performance tuning is as much an art as it is a science. Tune one parameter for increased performance and you may degrade three others in the process. Chackett Consulting has extensive experience using a very wide variety of tools for managing and tuning for performance.
Some of the tools we implement include:

  • OS tools such as vmstat iostat netstat and memstat
  • The SE Toolkit by Adrian Cockroft and Adrian Pettit
  • Orca (Built on the Orcallator)
  • Load tools such as LoadRunner and WinRunner from Mercury Interactive

A typical performance tuning exercise will investigate various subsystems:

  • The kernel
  • The disk subsystem (I/O)
  • The memory subsystem (paging and swapping)
  • The TCP/IP stack (NIC bottlenecks and stack queues)
